A group of women take a look at a well dressing in the village of Hayfield in the Peak District, Derbyshire on 4 July 2022. The theme of this years wells festival is ‘The Seasons’.
Well dressing is the art of decorating springs or wells with pictures made from natural products. Clay is pressed on to boards followed by the delicate task of infilling with flower petals and other natural materials.
The blessing of the water supply in the form of a well is an ancient ceremony dating back to the Celts. The practice of decoration of wells was developed during the Victorian era and generally only found in or around Derbyshire.
